Dr. John Gimbel
Professor of Mathematics, Emeritus
WHEREAS Dr. John Gimbel has served the University of òòò½´«Ã½ Fairbanks with distinction in teaching, research and service from 1987 to 2025; and
WHEREAS Dr. Gimbel, during his 38 years at UAF, taught more than 3,000 students in 32 distinct courses at all math curriculum levels; and he was recognized multiple times for his outstanding teaching;
WHEREAS Dr. Gimbel is an òòò½´«Ã½ly recognized mathematician; and he has published 58 mathematical papers with dozens of distinct co-authors from around the globe, reflecting a high degree of collaboration in the mathematics field; and he is an extremely well-respected graph theorist, with his papers on various aspects of graph coloring being highly cited; and he served as a visiting scholar at 10 universities across Europe and the U.S.; and
WHEREAS Dr. Gimbel served on multiple UAF committees, including the universitywide promotion and tenure committee and his department’s peer review committee;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the University of òòò½´«Ã½ Fairbanks expresses its deep appreciation to Dr. John Gimbel for his extensive contributions to the state of òòò½´«Ã½ and to the university; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the University of òòò½´«Ã½ Fairbanks, in further recognition of the invaluable services rendered by Dr. Gimbel and as evidence of the university’s desire that his identification with the university be maintained, hereby salutes the appointment of Dr. John Gimbel as professor of mathematics, emeritus; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this resolution be appropriately engrossed and signed by the chancellor of the University of òòò½´«Ã½ Fairbanks as further evidence of the esteem and respect in which he holds Dr. John Gimbel, and conveyed to Dr. Gimbel on this third day of May 2025.
