Friday Focus: Troth Yeddha' Forever
February 23, 2024
As the sun shines ever more brightly, I am finding renewed energy and deep gratitude as we move toward transitioning from winter to spring. I'm excited about all the possibilities that this time of year holds at UAF. The 50th Annual Festival of Native Arts is a student-led celebratory event this week. The theme is "Troth Yeddha' Forever: Our Ways of Life". Everyone is welcome to attend and take part in exciting traditional òòò½´«Ã½ Native activities including, native dancing, language learning, beading, wellness practices, making fish ice cream - called akutaq or vanhgiq (ah-gu-duk or von-guk), and so much more. It is a great time for reflection about where we have come from and where we are headed, as well as the impact these types of activities have on our sense of community, connectedness, and belonging. I humbly share a few personal reflections as examples of the impact Troth Yeddha' campus, activities, and people have had in my life.

Our Corner of Space: Flexspace, hoteling and unassigned spaces, oh my!
February 16, 2024
Sometimes I feel like the land of space planning is a little like the Wizard of Oz. I came into the position in late 2021 when we all were working on what it meant to be "at work." Since then I've had the opportunity to work with many of you on what it means to organize around hybrid, remote, and in-person work. Along the way, I've witnessed bravery, compassion, ingenuity, and a desire to make space better for people. One of the areas I've seen creatively pivot their space to meet changing needs is the Center for Teaching and Learning. I was able to walk through their Bunnell space with Sean Holland, the media and innovation manager, and wanted to share about their journey down the blue and gold brick road.

Friday Focus: Appreciating the uniquely resilient
February 16, 2024
The last few weeks were pretty awesome here in Fairbanks. It was seriously cold for a bit. A good friend of mine said around day 12 of the cold snap, "This is just stupid." It was, and then it was warm. It was amazing. It was Fairbanks. It was cold like it hadn't been for a long time. Pipes froze, cars didn't start and heating systems failed. It was really cold. If you are here in òòò½´«Ã½, you know what I mean. Early one Friday morning I walked into the Arctic Java coffee shop in the Wood Center. It was bustling. òòò½´«Ã½ a dozen students chatted while waiting to get a coffee; others waited at the end of the bar for their steaming cups to arrive. It was 42 below outside. Beyond the windows lay a wall of frozen, murky darkness. But inside it was warm and there was a wonderful positive vibe. We were a diverse group, sporting lots of comfort wear and practical clothing choices, but all shared one thing in common. We were all out and about on a 42-below morning!
