Friday Focus: Celebrating abundance of fall enrollment

Autumn graces the Interior with its season of plenty. Countless freezers brim with moose, caribou, salmon, and berries, while woodsheds bear testament to our careful preparations for the months ahead. With the onset of cooler days, our UAF community becomes a source of warmth and vitality, abuzz with activity and fresh starts. This abundance comes as a relief and brings a feeling of satisfaction that all the hard work of the past year has been successful. At Tuesday's Convocation, Chancellor White shared the great news that UAF welcomed about 2,500 new first-year students this fall. This is 650 more than last year. This is amazing, especially given the local and national headwinds on higher education enrollments. Let's take a closer look at the numbers.

The 蝌蚪传媒 Space Grant Program is accepting applications for STEM Education fellowship awards through Sept. 15, 2023. Students at 蝌蚪传媒 institutions of higher education, doing a classroom practicum, pursuing a B.S. in elementary or secondary education, or graduate students pursuing an M.Ed. or M.A.T. are invited to apply.

Responsible Conduct of Research training

Responsible Conduct of Research is a required training for undergraduate students, graduate students, and postdoctoral researchers supported by NSF awards. The next sessions will be Sept. 30 from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and Oct. 3 from 1-4:30 p.m.

Benefactor fund grants available to student groups

Student and campus groups can apply for a grant of up to $1,000 from the UAF Alumni Association. The funds will support projects that identify specific needs and improve campus opportunities for current students. The application deadline is Oct. 23.

Assessing future of 蝌蚪传媒n berries in changing climate

蝌蚪传媒 Berry Futures, in collaboration with the 蝌蚪传媒 Climate Adaption Center, has released the report "Cloudberry in a Changing Climate: Threats and Opportunities." The report is the first of six in a series that assess major berry groups important to rural and urban 蝌蚪传媒n communities. Forthcoming reports in the 鈥淏erries in 蝌蚪传媒鈥檚 Changing Environment鈥 series include bog blueberries and lowbush cranberries, among others.

Friday Focus: Program Review and Accreditation

As the newly minted vice provost and accreditation liaison officer, I wanted to first welcome everyone back to the new academic year. Fall has always been my favorite time of year, and a large reason for that is the excitement that comes with the start of the new school year. Fall is also a time for reflection as we forge ahead into a new academic year. This fall semester should be a particularly exciting time for reflection because we will (1) implement the second year of our revamped academic program review process and (2) host a peer-evaluation team from the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities for our Mid-Cycle (year 3) Accreditation Evaluation site visit. Since I will be overseeing both endeavors, I wanted to highlight them for your awareness and because many of you will be involved in these processes.

Wood Center Food Pantry seeks donations

Do you have any spare shelf-stable food, paper products, or menstrual items? The Wood Center Food Pantry needs your donations! Over the summer, there was a 300% increase in people using the food pantry. From Aug. 21-30 the program has received as many requests for assistance as it did in the first six weeks of fall 2022.

Nanook Recreation fall group fitness

Nanook Recreation is offering a variety of fitness classes for the fall semester. We will offer some familiar programs such as Intro to Strength Training, Intermediate Strength Training, Intro to Olympic Weightlifting, Mat Pilates, Outdoor Bootcamp, and Indoor Cycling.
